“What If…” Film Series presents Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory

April 10, 2018 - 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Please Join us for the second film of the 2018 Gifford Foundation “What If…” Film Series
Presented in partnership with St. Joseph’s Health, in collaboration with Healing Arts / Music Service and Volunteer Services

ALIVE INSIDE is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity. Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett chronicles the astonishing experiences of individuals around the country who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music. His camera reveals the uniquely human connection we find in music and how its healing power can triumph where prescription medication falls short.

This stirring documentary follows numerous visionaries in healthcare including social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it.

An uplifting cinematic exploration of music and the mind, ALIVE INSIDE’s inspirational and emotional story left audiences humming, clapping and cheering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award.

St. Joseph’s Health, in collaboration with Healing Arts / Music Service and Volunteer Services, are a certified ‘Music & Memory’ hospital and are developing this music volunteer program to create personal play-lists for patients, particularly for those who are admitted with some disorientation, for example, for patients with Alzheimer’s. They load a selected play-list onto an iPod with headphones for the patient to use as needed during their hospital stay. They have already seen some significant results with a sample number of participants and are looking for a team of volunteers to extend the program, with the initial goal of providing this service for every patient admitted who has any dementia or confusion.

As part of this event we will be accepting donations of used iPhones and iPods and iTunes cards. (Only Apple devices are used in the program).
