What Did That Marker Say? A presentation by NOON

November 30, 2010 - 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Speakers: Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation (NOON)

NOON Marker

They are everywhere – Historical Markers. We’ve all seen them. Did you ever ask yourself, “Is that accurate?” It isn’t always! What goes on the markers is impacted by who funded its erection, the time period in which it was erected, the prevailing beliefs at the time and/or cultural/historical misinformation. What was left off is often as important as what was on the marker.

Members of the Historic Markers Committee of NOON (Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation) will share what they are learning in their work researching Historic Markers related to Haudenosaunee history throughout the CNY area. They will pass out tips on how to evaluate Markers yourself. Sample markers will be discussed in detail. They are posting rewrites and expanded information on their web site. In addition, they plan to work towards changing some markers and to erect new ones.
