THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (1940)

December 17, 2011 - 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Margaret Sullivan & James Stewart

With vast wit and wisdom, director Ernst Lubitsch graced his films with what became  known as The Lubitsch Touch.  Our holiday offering, THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER is one of his best-loved and most charming works.  Set in a gift shop in Budapest, it is beautifully performed by a very young James Stewart and radiant Margaret Sullivan.  They play battling shop clerks who do not realize they have been falling in love with each other as penpals … until Christmas Eve rolls around. Filmgoers may remember  the musical remake, In the Good Old Summertime (1949) and the updated You’ve Got Mail (1998). Both were successful but this rarely seen original is the honey.
