MAURICE (1987) 2hr 19min

Directed by James Ivory. With Hugh Grant, Rupert Graves, James Wilby

This luscious  screen version of E. M. Forster’s classic novel depicts the struggle for gay acceptance  in Edwardian England where homosexuality is outlawed. With compelling sensitivity it shows how two university chums fall in love against all odds– and how each deals with it in a different way.   Forster wrote MAURICE in 1914 when its subject was forbidden, and the book’s publication was suppressed until 1971, a year after his  death.  A stellar cast and director James Ivory’s exquisite style bring to life a “beautifully told tale…period dramas, let alone gay ones, do not come better than this…” (gaycelluloid.com)
