Irving Berlin’s TOP HAT (1935) (101min)

January 17, 2014 - 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

The weather outside may be frightful but inside ArtRage it’s delightful with our three-week look at “The Hollywood Musical”  1930s – 1950s
Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers
Directed by Mark Sandrich

Discover, or rediscover, Astaire and Rogers! They tap-danced their way through the Great Depression in ten delightful films that brightened the spirits of a weary nation and elevated the film musical, and ballroom dancing, to an art form. In their usual mistaken identity plot American hoofer Fred pursues Ginger through the halls of London society. Yet TOP HAT “does not glorify wealth of upper class — if anything it pokes fun at it,” (Cinematic Reflections).

Super footwork and snazzy Art Deco sets and costumes are enhanced by sparkling b&w camerawork and 11 lilting Irving Berlin tunes from the sophisticated “Top Hat, White Tie and Tails” to ecstatic “Cheek to Cheek”.
