The children of immigration, here to stay, are the new Americans. How we fare in welcoming them will determine the nature of this country in the 21st century and beyond. In “I Learn America,” five resilient immigrant teenagers come together over a year at the NYC International High School at Lafayette, and struggle to learn their new land. Through these five vibrant young people, their stories and struggles, and their willingness to open their lives and share them with us, we “learn America.” Watch the trailer at  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbW4gytQCiE&feature=youtu.be

Twice a year the Gifford Foundation “What If…” Film Series screens documentaries, selected by community members, which offer examples of how social issues are addressed across the country. The goal of these free films is not to only tell the tales, but embrace how Syracuse and Central New York might adapt the stories for our own. Each film is followed by a moderated discussion.

Special Note: Two of this season’s screening will be shown at off-site locations in partnership with community based organizations.

There will be another screening of “I Learn America” on October 23rd at Fowler High School.

All films start at 6:30; doors open at 6:00 for light snacks, meet and greet, gallery viewings.
