Ashley Kang

Ashley Kang

Ashley Kang serves as director of The Stand, Syracuse’s South Side Community Newspaper Project. The effort targets Syracuse’s South Side neighborhood and is produced in partnership with Newhouse students, Syracuse residents and a community board of directors. The paper aims to show the positive things happening within the neighborhood as well as the obstacles to success residents face.

In March 2018, The Stand’s annual Photo Walk project, coordinated each year by Kang, was selected as one of seven Finding Common Ground grant awardees. The selection committee reviewed more than 50 proposals to narrow down the winners, which receive up to 10,000€ to support their engaged journalism project. She served as a co-author to the cohort’s final report “Building Engagement: A Report on Supporting the Practice of Relational Journalism,” published in April of 2019

Additionally in 2018, she was selected as one of 33 John Jay/H.F. Guggenheim Justice Reporting Fellows. The fellowship is aimed at encouraging and promoting top-quality journalism on criminal justice.

She is a graduate of the Newhouse School and the Syracuse University School of Education.
