Extinct Organism Illustration Workshop by Katie Mulligan

October 11, 2026 - 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM

As human behavior and development drive the loss of numerous organisms and a global decline in species populations, this workshop invites us to understand the depth of the loss that natural communities are experiencing. Through this experience, you’ll create an illustration centered on an extinct species and make an alluring image capturing viewers’ attention while also communicating something about the organism.

This workshop will begin with an introduction to sketching, illustration development, and recommended planning methods, including rough color comps. Katie encourages all participants to experiment with different media and formats to convey information or context about your selected organism.

To prepare for the workshop, Katie invites you to research an extinct organism you would like to discuss and illustrate during the workshop. Katie will provide prepped reference images of extinct wetland organisms if you would like to use one of hers.
