BEYOND THE GLASS: Making a Center for Ecology out of Syracuse’s Aquarium

May 15, 2023 - 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Join The Canary Lab at ArtRage for an invigorating discussion about the proposed aquarium in Syracuse. The discussion will be moderated by artist, Syracuse University Professor and current Guggenheim Fellow, Edward Morris. It will feature brief presentations by SUNY ESF professors Sharon Moran and Shari Dann and the debut of a short animated film (3 mins) by Remi Jose, a graduating senior at Syracuse University and a student of both Moran and Morris.

The focus of the discussion will be how to ensure that all or a significant portion of the aquarium will be devoted to local ecology and sustainability and also to ensure that the voices, history and current perspectives of the Onondaga Nation will be given the appropriate respect and space.

Professor Moran has written a short proposal of key points to consider for the aquarium that directly inspired the animated short by Jose. Professor Dann is a member of the Science, Environment and Education Advisory Committee for the aquarium and one of the authors of a report advocating the key points for the discussion.

All are welcome who want to learn more about the proposed aquarium and/or who want to learn how to add their voice to the call for a local ecology, sustainability, and indigenous focus to the facility.

FREE to the public.

Refreshments will be served.
