Ben Altman Artist Talk

Ben Altman (b. 1953) trained as an artist by studying Physics, towing icebergs, building and racing sailboats, and working in commercial photography. A naturalized U.S. citizen of British origin, his work responds to episodes of mass violence and how to negotiate with them in the present. He uses photography, film, sculpture, installation, performance, earth art, sound, weather, and social practice.

Altman has received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, a NYSCA/NYFA Fellowship, New York State Council on the Arts Individual Artist and Artist Support grants, and grants from The Center for Photographic Art and the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County. His work has been selected for the Houston Center for Photography’s Fellowship and the Critical Mass Top 50. 

Solo, two-person, and featured artist venues include: Pingyao International Photography Festival, China; Cambridge University, UK; Granary Arts, Ephraim, Utah; Light Work, Syracuse, NY; the Kopeikin Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; the Dowd Gallery, SUNY Cortland, NY; Handwerker Gallery, Ithaca College, NY; Sol Mednick Gallery, University of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA; Artrage Gallery, Syracuse, NY; and Gallery Aferro, Newark NJ.
