ArtRage is no ordinary gallery.

We are committed to breaking down the art world’s boundaries about who is welcome. We believe that everyone has the right to art and that art is essential to building an open, just world. Our vision for change is one that creates a community of open-minded, tolerant individuals with an appreciation for the inclusion of art in everyday life. We offer the community an experience that encourages the breakdown of boundaries so that people can see themselves in the work and then in one another. We exhibit art that cultivates critical thinking skills; leading to question the power structures that exist in our society and to imagine other ways of life.

That, we believe, is the seed of a movement for cultural and social change.

An award-winning photographer for the Syracuse Post-Standard, Mike Greenlar traveled 10 times to a remote mountain region of Laos to document the effects of cluster bombing on the Hmong people. The US covert bombing campaign, between 1964 and 1973, gave Laos the distinction of being the most bombed country in the history of warfare — over two million tons of ordnance was dropped.

Mike documented life in two resettlement villages where the Hmong continue to farm land rife with unexploded cluster bombs and other munitions. His work shows the resourcefulness of a people who rely on each other, and on those very bombs, for their livelihood.

The result is a stunning collection of documentary photographs. Remnants of a Secret War, also the title of his recently published book, displays both some of the collection found in the book and some never before published. The legacy of the “secret” bombings of Laos takes many forms and offers many stories. In this collection of painfully yet beautifully rendered black & white photographs, he shares some of them with us.

TRUCK FARM 2011 (48min)
Directed by Curt Ellis and Ian Cheney

Somewhere on the streets of Brooklyn, New York, a tiny farmon-wheels is growing in the back of a 1986 Dodge pick-up truck. Filmmaker Ian Cheney planted his truck farm in 2009 after moving to New York City and realizing there was no space to grow food.

The 1/1000th acre farm started as an experiment, using rooftop farming irrigation techniques to grow a variety of plants including parsley, broccoli, lettuce, tomatoes, and basil. The miniature yield is not enough to support large-scale consumption; however, the truck farm serves as a portable educational tool for urban students and a tribute to edible innovation. In just two years, the original project has
expanded into 25 mobile truck farms across the country. Each truck in this “Truck Farm Fleet” is unique, but together this moving force is teaching people that growing food can be fun, easy, and rewardingdespite a scarcity of land.

In a year long collaboration with the Rosamond Gifford Foundation, ArtRage Gallery will screen six films depicting community efforts to improve their communities and the world. The fall series of three films focusing on food issues will begin in September and run thru November 2012. Films were selected by a committee of community members and are shown twice at different days and times followed by a facilitated discussion. All films are free to the public. No reservation is required.

Partnering organizations for the fall “What If…” Film Series: Alchemical Nursery, Bread and Roses Collective, Eat to Live Food Cooperative: The Southside Food Co-op Project, Slow Food CNY, Syracuse Grows, Syracuse Real Food Co-op.

Directed by Tonje Hessen Schei

One generation from now most people in the U.S. will have spent more time in the virtual world than in nature. New media technologies have improved our lives in countless ways. Information now appears with a click. Overseas friends are part of our daily lives. And even grandma loves Wii.

But what are we missing when we are behind screens? And how will this impact our children, our society, and eventually, our planet? At a time when children play more behind screens than outside, PLAY AGAIN explores the changing balance between the virtual and natural worlds. Is our connection to nature disappearing down the digital rabbit hole?
