The Palestinian “Nakba” (“catastrophe” in Arabic) refers to the mass expulsion of more than 700,000 Palestinians from their homes in 1947-48. The Nakba was a deliberate, systematic act necessary for the creation of a Jewish majority state in historic Palestine.

The Nakba continues today in the form of ongoing Israeli theft of Palestinian land for Jewish-only settlements, the destruction of Palestinian homes and agricultural land, periodic brutal military assaults that result in mass civilian casualties such as the one that took place in Gaza in 2014, and the denial of the internationally-recognized legal right of return of millions of stateless Palestinian refugees.

Guest speakers: Dr Osamah Khalil. Dr. Khalil is Assistant Professor of History at Syracuse University. He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of “America’s Dream Palace: Middle East Expertise and the Rise of the National Security State” which was published by Harvard University Press in October 2016. Khalil is also the co-founder of Al-Shabaka, the Palestinian Policy Network.
