THE YES MEN FIX THE WORLD – Film Fundraiser for the Community and Resistance Tour

September 2, 20107:00 pmto9:00 pm

FINALLY: PROTECTION FOR THE CORPORATE ELITE

YES MEN bubble2FROM HALLIBURTON – A NAME YOU TRUST
In order to head off catastrophic scenarios from Global Warming, scientists agree we must reduce our carbon emissions by 70% within the next few years. Doing that would seriously undermine corporate profits, however, and so a more forward-thinking solution is needed. SurvivaBalls™ (image above) save managers from abrupt climate change. An advanced new technology will keep corporate managers safe even when climate change makes life as we know it impossible.

YES Men bubblehttp://theyesmenfixtheworld.com/story.htm

“A wickedly fun skewering of corporate greed, THE YES MEN FIX THE WORLD is the true story of two conscientious mischief-makers who pose as the representatives of companies they despise. In this wonderfully therapeutic film, Yes Men Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno impose cosmic (and comic) justice by any means necessary.”

$5-15 sliding scale donation to help bring the Community and Resistance Tour to Syracuse on September 17th. More information about the tour is below. Popcorn and refreshments will be available.

Before the Yes Men film there will also be a screening of “New Orleans: A Man Made Disaster” – a short video looking at the political hurricane that hit New Orleans along with Katrina, and the fight to save public housing in the aftermath.

About the Community and Resistance Tour:

The Community and Resistance Tour will be coming to Syracuse on Friday, September 17th (more details to be announced soon). There will also be a picnic fundraiser in Barry Park at 1:00pm Saturday, August 28th to support the tour. E-mail syrcommunityresistance@gmail.com for info.

Speakers at the September 17th event will include Jordan Flaherty and Jesse Muhammad. Jordan is the author of the recently published book Floodlines, and is a New Orleans-based writer and organizer who was involved in post-Katrina resistance and relief efforts. Jesse is a community organizer, blogger and social media strategist based in Houston who provided independent media coverage of New Orleans after the storm. Both helped bring the story of the Jena 6 to a national audience.

“The Community and Resistance Tour seeks to communicate about current struggles for justice and liberation, from the current BP Oil Drilling Disaster devastating the Gulf Coast to nooses hung in the northern Louisiana town of Jena. From women organizing inside prisons to cultural resistance. The tour also seeks to connect communities of liberation, and to build relationships between grassroots activists and independent media. This tour is for anyone interested in issues of health care, education, criminal justice, housing, or the ways in which systems of racism, patriarchy and other forms of oppression intersect with these struggles.” http://communityandresistance.wordpress.com

AMERICANS WHO TELL THE TRUTH

September 11, 2010 6:00 pmtoOctober 23, 2010 4:00 pm

Howard_Zinn

“The rule of law does not do away with the unequal distribution of wealth and power, but reinforces that inequality with the authority of law. It allocates wealth and poverty in such calculated and indirect ways as to leave the victim bewildered.” – Howard Zinn – Historian, Political Theorist, Educator, 1922 – 2010

The greatness of our country is being tested and will be measured not by its military might but by its restraint, compassion, and wisdom. A democracy, whose leaders and media do not try to tell the people the truth, is a democracy in name only. This remarkable collection of portraits is intended to remind people of the dignity, courage and importance of some of America’s truth tellers.

Each portrait includes a moving quote by the subject (see above) and a biography is displayed with each painting. One lesson to be learned from all of these Americans is that the greatness of our country frequently depends not on the letter of the law, but the insistence of a single person that we adhere to the spirit of the law.
