Opening Reception – Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 7pm

This exhibit by two of Central New York’s leading feminist photographers, Ruth Putter and Mima Cataldo, is an inspiration to present social activists, reminding us that it is critical to understand that the freedoms we enjoy in the USA were not given but rather won by constant struggle, resistance and organizing.

The exhibit covers 35 years of resistance in CNY, including photographs from their time with the women at the Seneca Women’s Encampment for a Future of Peace and Justice in 1982 and new work by both artists.

Freedom Flotilla Assault

July 1, 20107:00 pmto9:00 pm

Israel’s murderous assault on the Freedom Flotilla has made it clear that the status quo in the Middle East in unsustainable. There is increasing resistance within Palestine and around the world to the Apartheid state of Israel. In the US, hundreds of thousands of people have been organizing to defeat SB 1070—the Arizona law legalizing racial profiling– and all other racist and anti-immigrant legislation.

This event will provide presentations and discussions on:

  • The failed imperialist policy to create a “new Middle East” through war, threats of war, and occupation.
  • The Freedom Flotilla massacre: a turning point in the Middle East?
  • Living in occupied Palestine: an eye-witness report
  • An injury to one is an injury to all: defending immigrants rights.

Join the struggle to end all forms of Apartheid!

Normal still image 29NorMal, is a weaving together of interviews from those who speak of autism, cerebral palsy, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, impotence, infertility, ADD, Mental Illness, etc. The film suggests that there is more to be known about people with ‘disabilities’ than what we, the general public, might gleam at first glance.  Participants “speak” for themselves, (whether or not audibly) to dispel commonly held assumptions of disability –of what it means to have a disability, and of who is disabled.

El Sistema/Tocar Y Luchar (To Play & To Fight)

July 11, 20104:00 pmto6:00 pm

Only those who dream achieve the impossible.

Tocar

To Play and To Fight (Tocar Y Luchar) is an inspirational story of courage, determination, ambition, and love showing us that… only those who dream can achieve the impossible.

To Play and To Fight presents the captivating story of the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra System – an incredible network of hundreds of orchestras formed within most of Venezuela’s towns and villages. Once a modest program designed to expose rural children to the wonders of music, the system has become one of the most important and beautiful social phenomena in modern history.

The documentary portrays the inspirational stories of world class musicians trained by the Venezuelan system (El Sistema), including the Berlin Philharmonic’s youngest player Edicson Ruiz and world renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel. With interviews with many of the world’s most celebrated musicians including the great tenor Placido Domingo, Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, Guiseppe Sinopoli, and Eduardo Mata.

“The System (El Sistema) performs a preventative function in that it helps young people to stay away from drug abuse, prostitution, alcoholism, indifference, crime, bad company, and corruption. The reason is that participating in the orchestral movement is an inexhaustible source of personal development directed toward the fulfillment of both personal and collective goals. The child, when discovering the joys of practicing a musical instrument and getting an inkling of the possibilities that the orchestra can offer him or her, begins to aspire towards a better economic and social situation for his or her family and relatives. This represents the will to improve the conditions for all, as well as to improve the condition of oneself.” - Jose Antonio Abreu, founder of El Sistema

Featuring Los Angeles Philharmonic Guest Conductor Gustavo Dudamel.
