COMBAT PAPER

October 8, 2008toNovember 1, 2008

Saturday, October 11, 2008
7-9 p.m.

We are proud to open our gallery with this exciting exhibit. COMBAT PAPER is a collaborative project initiated by Drew Matott and Drew Cameron along with members of the Iraq Veterans Against the War. Utilizing uniforms worn in combat in Iraq, veterans cut, cook, beat and form sheets of paper out of their uniforms. In this way, veterans are able to use the transformation processes of papermaking to reclaim their uniform as art and begin to reconcile their experiences as a soldier in Iraq.

The Combat Paper project is an art therapy that utilizes paper as its medium and has been generating hope and inspiration for war veterans all across the country. The project has a positive impact on veterans, serves as a visceral statement of the long lasting effects of combat and acts as a catalyst for community discussion and activism.

This exhibit also features readings from the IVAW’s Warrior Writers’ Project and IVAW performance art on October 16, 2008. Read more.

“Iran Is Not The Problem”

October 10, 20087:30 pm

Iran is Not the ProblemThis film is an urgent response to the failure (again) of U.S. commercial media to provide accurate, objective information rather than the rightist spin. It contains current analysis and history, including the U.S. overthrow of the democratic Iranian government in 1953 and interviews with Iranian Americans. Noam Chomsky was an advisor for the filmmakers.

Th3 event: IVAW documentary & Warrior Writer’s reading

October 16, 20085:00 pmto8:00 pm

As a member of the Third Thursday partnership of Syracuse art galleries, we will highlight our Grand Opening exhibit, COMBAT PAPER in this Th3 event with readings from IVAW’s Warrior Writers’ Project presented by IVAW members. The evening’s events will begin with a 6pm screening of a 45 minute documentary on the project.

The Warrior Writers Project is an opportunity for veterans to come together and connect. It provides tools and space for community building, healing and redefinition to Iraq Veterans through writing/artistic workshops that are based on experiences in the military and Iraq. The veterans unbury their experiences and connect with each other on a personal and artistic level. The writing from the workshops is compiled into books, performances and exhibits that provide a lens into the hearts of people who have a deep and intimate relationship with the Iraq war. Furthermore, it gives the veterans a sense of ownership over their stories and strength in their voice, perspective and power. The ability to reconcile and heal through sharing their words with each other and you is enabled through the purchase of the books, Warrior Writers and Re-Making Sense for sale at the event. The funds generated help pay for veterans from around the country to travel to Warrior Writer workshops. Volumes are in the permanent collections at Yale University, University of Vermont and the University of Minnesota.
